Tip #1: Practice Your Two-Handed Axe Throw
The two-handed axe through is the best technique for beginners—and it’s no wonder why. This throw provides a blend of balance, accuracy, and control that is essential for beginning your journey to Spartan strength. Here’s how do you it:
Hold the Axe Firmly, but Not Tightly. Make sure you have a good enough grasp on your axe that you won’t drop it, but not so tight that letting go is difficult. A tight grip makes it harder to release the axe in one fluid motion, which affects accuracy.
Throw the Axe at Eye Level. As you bring your arms forward over your head, make sure to release the axe at eye level.
Adjust Your Distance. If the axe head hits parallel to the target board, then you’re at the perfect distance. If only the top of the axe head heads, you likely over-rotated and should take a step back. If the handle hit, you under-rotated and should step forward.
Practicing these steps until you’re consistently sinking your axe head into the target will help you establish control and balance in axe throwing.
Tip #2: Practice Throwing in One Fluid Motion
To truly master axe throwing, you’ll need to learn how to throw in one fluid motion. That might sound easy at first, but you’d be surprised how much goes into a fluid axe throw. While some parts of you will stay in motion throughout the entire throw, others need to remain completely static.
Muscles in Motion. Throughout the throw, you’ll need to keep your arms and fingers either in motion or ready to move in an instant.
Static Muscles. This is the hard part. Throughout the throw, make sure to maintain steady posture, keep your chest facing forward, and—most importantly—don’t flick your wrists.
