Bowling Tips for Bowlers of All Ages
Here at Spare Time Entertainment Center, we believe bowling is one of the best ways to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. That said, even among friends and family it’s always feels good to hone your skills. With that in mind, we’re taking this month’s blog post to discuss tips for becoming a better bowler.
Setting Up for the Swing
The first element of improving your bowling game is setting up for the perfect swing. Like many other sports, it’s all about mastering the form and knowing where to aim.
Aim for the Pocket, Not the Pins
Though this might surprise you, the best place to aim your bowling ball isn’t actually at the pins. While aiming for the pins is a good way to score some points, it’s much less reliable at getting what you really want: a strike. By aiming for the pocket between the first and third pin (or first and second if you’re left-handed), you can maximize the pin carry, which makes it so pins are most likely to fly into one another and knock each other down.
Keep a Balanced Stance
Now that you know where to aim, it’s important to master your stance. Here are a few key points to consider:
- Keep Your Feet Shoulder-Width Apart. Maximizing your balance will keep you steady as you swing the ball, increasing your control over accuracy and power.
- Swing the Ball with a Straight Arm. Bending your elbow adds another factor that can influence your swing for the worse. Keep things simple and make sure your arm stays straight.
- Curl Your Fingers. As you release the ball, curl your fingers so it spins down the lane. This is just one more way to give you control over the ball and accurately reach.
How to Choose the Right Bowling Ball
If you’re like many bowlers, then you may just choose a bowling ball based on how it feels to hold. And while it is essential that you use a bowling ball that feels best for you, you may also want to consider a couple other essential factors.
Weight of a Bowling Ball. As any physics enthusiasts may already know, heavier bowling balls usually have a higher momentum when compared to lighter bowling balls. So, as a general rule, you should try to use bowling balls with a heavier weight to ensure a better collision.
Coverstock Material. Coverstock material is an essential consideration for frequent bowlers. Coverstock is the coating on the outside of the bowling ball, and different materials can provide different benefits for friction, durability, and dry/oiled lanes.
Core Type. The core of each bowling ball is also important to keep in mind. You may not have guessed it, but bowling balls aren’t all solid all the way through. Instead, the cores are structured in different ways that impact the balance of the ball and the number of revolutions.
