3 Tips for Masterful Axe Throwing
It’s almost impossible not to feel like a Spartan after an afternoon of axe throwing. Something about feeling the grip of the wooden handle, raising the axe over your head, and letting it fly to see the axe head bite into the target is a fun and empowering experience.
That said, Rome wasn’t built in a day and true Spartan axe throwers aren’t molded overnight. It takes practice and know-how in order to truly excel at axe throwing, and there’s always room to improve. But how do you know what to improve? Well in this month’s blog post, we’re discussing 3 tips for improving your axe throwing game.
1. Use Your Arms and Avoid Flicking Your Wrists
If you’ve ever played basketball, then you’ve learned that a good throwing game is all in the wrist. When you take a shot in basketball, flicking your wrist provides superior control of the direction and strength of your throw. In axe throwing, the opposite is true.
The accuracy and power of an axe throw has more to do with the movement of your body as you move your body forward slightly and use your arms to guide your throw. Wrist flicking can weaken your throw, misdirect the act, and possibly even lead you to hurt yourself.
2. Learn the Movements of a Strong Axe Throw
Another essential to a strong axe throw is learning the right movements and grip strength. Here are a few fundamentals to keep in mind:
- Step with your non-dominant foot. We recommend stepping with your non-dominant foot in order to generate power and balance. We specify you non-dominant foot because your dominant foot should be used to help you balance.
- Avoid squeezing the axe handle. Though you’ll want to keep a firm grip on your axe, don’t white-knuckle it. Doing so can make it harder to release in time, hurt your fingers, and worsen your accuracy.
- Pull the axe straight back. It’s critical to make sure you pull the axe straight back when you wind up. If you pull the axe to your side, you’ll throw the axe at an angle, which worsens your form and can even cause you to miss your target entirely.
3. Join Local Axe Throwing Leagues
At the end of the day, the best way to improve is by getting out there and practicing. While you’re at it, we recommend joining some local axe throwing leagues. By practicing with other enthusiasts, you’ll be exposed to new axe throwing techniques and maybe even get some pointers from experienced throwers.
